Your support will provide for summer interns for the Horticulture Center!
Dr. Harold Balbach continues to support horticulture by
kicking off Birds Give Back with a $500 donation to the ISU Horticulture Center
for student summer internships and encourages you to participate today and
contribute what is feasible for you so we can meet our goal.
Most importantly, your participation during Birds Give Back
helps make the Horticulture Center a prominent nature-based learning space on
campus and in our community!
Tune into our live stream to watch the students build a
flower arrangement. Flowers will be added to the arrangement as we reach
incremental donation goals throughout the day, with each milestone contributing
to the overall beauty of the display.

Your support will provide for summer interns for the Horticulture Center!
The ISU Horticulture Center is looking to support student internships this summer as Horticulture Assistants. The students will have the following opportunities:
- learn about the workings of a public garden
- learn about ecological restoration
- become more familiar with plants and landscape techniques
and maintenance practices
- focus on their respective nature driven interests
- work alongside community volunteers and the public
- help plan and assist with garden events
- attend a Professional Development Trip to Wisconsin
Please consider donating today so we can make this a reality
for 3 Redbirds this summer!
Thank you for participating in Birds Give Back and
supporting our students.
Notes from our Summer Intern Students
Note from Redbird Diego Serriteno:
I have grown interested in the green industry ever since I
decided to pursue a degree and career in Horticulture. I believe that having
the opportunity to intern at a place like the ISU Horticulture Center could
benefit me in learning aspects outside of the classroom and being able to then
apply them in the future, which is my favorite part. As well as a lot of
history behind the center, this year they celebrate their 20th anniversary.
This big achievement for the center is also something I would definitely love
to be a part of. I've been grateful enough to know people who have worked or
are currently employed at the center and hear that their experiences along with
the work have been very enjoyable and rewarding. This would end up being my
very first internship, I am very excited to be a part of the team and
experience new aspects of the green industry.
Note from Redbird Lily Best:
My name is Lily Best. I am a senior graphic design and
photography major. I have been working with the Horticulture Center since
August 2023. During this time, I have been assigned various projects that align
with my creative inspirations. I would love to continue these projects and work
for the Center during the summer, as it will be a very transitional time in my
life. I would be able to continue working on the designs for the following
school year and building my portfolio for my future career!
Note from Redbird Kate Stahl:
My name is Kate Stahl, and I am a Senior Horticulture and
Landscape Management student here at ISU. This is my second year working at the
Horticulture Center and it has already taught me so much. After spending the
past two years here at Illinois State with the Horticulture Department, I have
decided to pursue my Master's degree here in the Fall. Having this summer
internship opportunity is another steppingstone moment for me here at ISU.
Here, I am able to pursue my passion of growing and am excited to continue
expanding my plant knowledge this summer and for the next few years!
