The Department of History exemplifies Illinois State University’s claim to combine the opportunities of a major research institution with the attributes of a small college. Thanks to a large and diverse faculty of active scholars, History can offer nearly one hundred challenging undergraduate and graduate courses in subjects ranging from Ancient Greece to the Modern Middle East, from African-American history to the history of genocide. At the same time, most of our class sizes are small. We take pride in the individualized attention we give to our students – especially when they conduct research projects in close collaboration with faculty mentors – and in our commitment to teaching excellence that stems from our important mission to train future History-Social Science educators. Indeed, we have one of the largest and most rigorous History teacher education programs in the country. With your support, we plan to build on our success by expanding the scholarships we provide to students who study abroad, our recruitment scholarships to students from underrepresented groups, and our support for student internships and research.
Department of History Excellence Fund
The Department of History Excellence Fund is used to help support a wide variety of activities associated with our educational mission. The Excellence Fund allows the Department to assist student research and internships beyond the campus; fund field trips, such as student visits to Abraham Lincoln sites and the Newberry Library; support scholarships that help students to study abroad; publish student work; and bring speakers to campus who contribute to making the Department a vibrant intellectual community.
